The sculpture is based on the famous Roman edifice, which celebrates the success of the Emperor Trajan in overcoming the Dacians. The piece is a follow up to a book published by Floating World in 2004, and updates that work by casting the Roman soldiers as modern day youngsters complete with hoodies and trainers
The work will function in different ways. On one level it might be quite funny. On another it references art history, the history of public sculpture and civic architecture and on another it is a meditation on the relentlessness of war in different eras and contexts; and the characteristics of those asked or coerced into waging it.
