Paul Malone : Quantum Redshift
'Quantum Redshift'
Clear perspex, red perspex, lead solder, fixtures
45 x 20 x 8 cms : 2001
A four layer rectangular perspex sandwich in two halves. Layer 3 is a sheet of clear perspex and contains a cross of independent red perspex disks. They are in linear positions corresponding to the quantum redshift values of 0.3, 0.6, 0.96, 1.41 and 1.96. Layer 2 is a sheet of red transparent perspex and incorporates several black perspex discs and solder splashes in a quasi-random 'area' arrangement (i.e. X = 0.3, Y = n) of the above values.

This unit recalls the concepts of Machian resonance and quantisation of galactic redshifts. The array of discs and splashes in the foreground act as exemplars for the linear arrangement behind. The whole is re-experienced as a machined artifact in red.
